New School Year and Blog

Welcome to the class blog for 8th grade Social Studies. A new school year brings a fresh start and new opportunities for all. In that spirit we began our social studies journey by setting some expectations, discussing the potential of iPads in education, and analyzing the habits of mind displayed by successful people. This work and more about 8th grade social studies can be viewed by following the "course information" link on the home page.

One of the 16 habits of mind is persistence, the ability to meet challenge with repeated effort, resisting the temptation to give up even after experiencing setbacks and failure. This habit probably got the most attention in our class discussions as students recognized its unique place as a factor in success. As a teacher one of my most important goals for the year is to challenge students in new ways; requiring students to expand critical thinking, express and defend their ideas, and create original products. Persistence in the face of these challenges will result in learning, success, and growth throughout the year.

As we study history there will be no shortage of examples for persistence. We now know the names of those who didn't give up, but instead kept going even under the most difficult circumstances.  Washington, Lincoln, Grant, and Sherman all serve as examples of how persistence leads to success. These are all well know historical figures, but we will also discover the monumental accomplishments of lesser known people.

It is my hope that this blog will become an important resource for updates on classroom activities throughout the year. I will be asking students to contribute blog posts regularly to enhance the perspective and give our writers an authentic audience. Please feel free to contact me with any question you may have.

Sincerely,
Eric Hadd
